Review of evidence supporting adverse reactions including vaccine injuries associated with COVID-19 vaccines has been requested by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS)

A review of evidence supporting adverse reactions and vaccine injuries associated with COVID-19 vaccines has been requested by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) and appears to be preparing for the addition of a series of vaccine injuries to the federal vaccine injury table. The report and its findings are expected to be available by March 2024. On March 22 2023, the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine (NASEM) announced that a public livestream session will be held next week, March 30th, relating to the committee charge of reviewing relevant literature regarding adverse events associated with COVID-19 vaccines. The meeting is expected to be live-streamed and allow public commentary. ### What COVID-19 Vaccine Injuries Will be Under Review? DHHS has asked the NASEM committee to review the medical literature for the following vaccine adverse events to determine if the evidence indicates that COVID-19 vaccines are causally associated with: - Guillain-Barrè Syndrome (GBS) - Chronic Inflammatory Demyelinating Polyneuropathy (CIDP) - Transverse Myelitis (TM) - Bell’s palsy - hearing loss - chronic headaches - infertility - sudden death - myocarditis/pericarditis - thrombosis with thrombocytopenia syndrome (TTS) - immune thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP) - thromboembolic events (e.g., cerebrovascular accident (CVA), myocardial infarction (MI), pulmonary embolism, deep vein thrombosis (DVT) - capillary leak syndrome - shoulder injury related to vaccine administration (SIRVA) ### Is this the Next Step Towards Financial Compensation for COVID-19 Vaccine Injuries? One thing is clear and that is that the DHHS is one step closer to completing a liability-free pathway to include COVID-19 vaccines into the VICP and making COVID-19 Vaccine Injuries available for financial compensation. After the NASEM report is completed, the report findings will be considered and potentially lead to the addition of COVID-19 vaccine injuries to the vaccine injury table. The only step remaining after COVID-19 vaccines are added to the vaccine injury table will be for Congress to enact the excise tax that is used in the funding of financial compensation awards from the VICP. ### How to View the Meetings Livestream? The livestream event will be aired publicly on the NASEM [event page](https://www.nationalacademies.org/event/03-27-2023/review-of-relevant-literature-regarding-adverse-events-associated-with-vaccines-meeting-2?utm_source=HMD+Email+List&utm_campaign=4650a70ae8-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2022_04_26_12_28_COPY_01&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_211686812e-4650a70ae8-180273609&mc_cid=4650a70ae8&mc_eid=71df894f67) and published after the event for additional viewing by the public.
