## Shoulder Pain After A Flu Shot: Is it SIRVA?
While the flu shot is generally safe and well-tolerated, it is not uncommon for some people to experience side effects, including localized pain or soreness at the injection site for a short period of time. However, there have been reported cases where individuals develop persistent shoulder pain after receiving a flu shot, also known as SIRVA (Shoulder Injury Related to Vaccine Administration), primarily due to the improper administration of the flu shot.
Gabi, a vaccine injury client, describes her prolonged shoulder pain (SIRVA) after receiving a vaccine.
## What Causes SIRVA?
SIRVA is primarily caused by an improper technique during the vaccine administration process. When the vaccine injection is too high or too deep, it can damage the underlying structures in the shoulder, leading to inflammation and pain. Factors contributing to SIRVA may include:
- Incorrect placement of the vaccine needle too high up on the shoulder, near the joint.
- Injecting the vaccine directly into the bursa or joint space.
- Poor visualization or lack of landmarks during vaccine administration.
Gabi, a vaccine injury client, talks about her initial conversation with vaccine injury lawyer David Carney that led to a large cash settlement for her rare adverse reaction to a vaccine (also known as a vaccine injury.)
## What are the Symptoms of SIRVA?
The symptoms of SIRVA usually begin immediately after the flu shot or within 48 hours of vaccination. Common signs include:
- Severe and persistent shoulder pain, often radiating down the arm.
- Limited range of motion in the affected shoulder joint.
- Difficulty lifting or moving the arm.
- Increased pain during certain activities, such as reaching overhead or carrying heavy objects.
- Weakness or a feeling of instability in the shoulder.
## If You Have SIRVA, You Might Qualify for Compensation
While shoulder pain after a flu shot is relatively common and will typically resolve on its own after a few days, severe and persistent shoulder pain could be a sign of SIRVA and should be evaluated immediately. If you believe you are experiencing persistent shoulder pain after a flu shot, you may have SIRVA and be entitled to financial compensation for your pain and suffering.
